A visiting lecturer to the Santa Barbara City College, Chen produced a body of work emanating from images he imagined from China's Cultural Revolution.

Monotypes
Xiaowen Chen was born in Dailan, China. In 1982 he recieved his BFA from Lu Xun Academy of Fine Arts in China. In 1987, he moved to the United States and recieved his MFA in Printmaking from Illinois State University five years later. Xiaowen Chen has exhibited in numerous solo and group shows in the United States and China and has taught at art and design institutions around the world. He has taken part in numerous artist residencies and visiting artist positions throughout the US and China. In 1996 he was hired as Professor at the New York State College of Ceramics at the School of Art and Design at Alfred University; in 2009 he became the Chair of the Division of Expanded Media at NYSCC
