"I knew Este in the 1990s when I was working as associated director for the design department of Tiffany & Co., New York, which collaborated since the 1950s with Este Ceramiche e Porcellane. It was very important to me that this coffee cup design could be a lively and elegant for the every day use, which respected the shape and tradition of this renewed factory. Since I'm an abstract painter, I started to get involved with ceramic art at the end of the '70s when I was doing my masters at Davis University of San Francisco, CA. There I met the sculptor ceramist Robert Arneson, who influenced a lot of the American ceramics of the '70s and '80s, both for the novelty of the subjects as well as for the innovative techniques.

Eric Erickson had a long relationship with Associate Professor Garner Tullis at the University of California starting the late seventies. Later Eric came to print in the Santa Barbara studio.
